Hengqin International Financial Center: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Aedas' Award-Winning Design Marries Ancient Inspiration with Modern Technology

The Hengqin International Financial Center, designed by Aedas, stands as a beacon of innovation and cultural heritage in the heart of Hengqin CBD Island. The project's unique and powerful shape draws inspiration from an ancient Chinese painting, the "Kowloon map". This inspiration is brought to life through the use of advanced digital techniques, resulting in a structure that embodies speed, power, and vitality.

The project is a comprehensive mixed-use land, encompassing office spaces, conference and exhibition centers, apartments, and retail outlets. The design's unique properties lie in its continuous and spiral shape, rising from the ground to the sky, symbolizing a convergence of energy in architectural form. This design is an attempt to forge a landmark building, a testament to the potential of comprehensive mixed-use land.

The realization of this unique form was made possible through the application of various digital technologies. 3D modeling software was used to create a continuous freeform that splits into four tower crowns from an elegant shape. Parametric design technology and coding calculation were employed to design and rationalize detailed façade panels, achieving both aesthetic appeal and economic efficiency. The type of glass used in the project was minimized to ensure smooth construction and cost control.

The project, standing at a height of 339.0 meters, was designed between 2013 and 2015. Construction began in February 2016 and was completed in March 2020 in Zhuhai, Guangdong, PRC. The design team conducted in-depth research on the local history and urban development history of Zhuhai, and performed numerous design tests to capture the most suitable traditional image for the site.

The Hengqin International Financial Center is a testament to the power of innovation and the potential of comprehensive mixed-use land. The project is a perfect blend of traditional Chinese totem and contemporary architecture development. It was awarded the Platinum in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, a recognition that underscores the project's world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative design that contributes to societal wellbeing.
